Worthy Runners are a running group based in Kings Worthy just outside Winchester. We are a social club, catering for all levels of runners who wish to run as part of a group. It’s free and friendly and no-one gets left behind.
We have a range of ages and abilities, but the one thing we all have in common is we just enjoy running. Our aim is to run together, whatever the weather, and enjoy the outdoors. We usually run distances between 5 and 10 km and whenever possible we love to run off-road.
We have group runs twice weekly - on a Monday evening and on a Thursday morning (details below). Many of our runners also participate in the Winchester parkrun on Saturday morning. Once a month we have a run, coffee and cake get-together. Most weeks we also have groups of runners meeting up on Tuesday and Sunday morning too. If you'd like to join us at these times please contact us for more details as start times and venues vary.
New runners are welcome to come along and join us on one of our regular local runs. Why not try us out if you've completed a Couch to 5km training plan and you want to keep on running?
Membership is free so do come along and find out what we are about.
Covid-19 Guidance (updated 20 April 2020)
New members welcome!
Even during Covid-19 lockdown.
If you haven’t joined us yet, do think about it. We might not be running in a group at the moment but we’re still having fun and sharing ideas, all ready for when we get back running together when the lockdown ends, as well as helping the community. Further information can be found on Facebook, once you have joined.
Helping the community during Covid-19.
Many of us are doing our own thing to help our local communities during this strange time, which is great. But we have also teamed up with other organisations including Winchester Rotary to do shopping, collect prescriptions and deliver leaflets. We have also delivered 250 PPE visors to 11 Winchester care homes
Protecting each other and supporting key workers.
When running, we need to protect ourselves and anyone we pass. We need to keep our 'slip stream' more than 2m away from others. To help, we should shout warnings when approaching people, and consider holding our breath and covering our mouth when passing people. Overtly wave to congratulate key workers.
Motivation ideas for running on your own
Many of us struggle to find self-motivation when running alone, especially if used to running in a group.
Create your own plan and stick to it.
Consider your preferred running schedule (runs, intervals, hills, or a mix), frequency (how often per week), times (time of day), routes (always the same or varied or a mix), targets (eg number of miles/km per month or preparing for a major event later in the year).
Stretch once warmed up and after run to reduce risk of injury.
Keep well hydrated.
As our regular group runs are not possible at the moment Worthy Runners have been motivating each other by weekly selfie challenges.
Next week's challenge is a tough one - a selfie at the top of St Catherine's Hill!
For the last 5 years, in mid-June, Worthy Runner's have enjoyed an evening social club run to Alresford, stopping off at various pub's en route. This has not been possible this year, but Doug decided not to let the occasion pass and did his own solo pub run. Not only did he take his own liquid refreshment, but he also ran back again as well.
Well done Doug!
